The fascination with UFOs in American popular culture surged from the 1960s to the 1990s, marked by significant events like the 1961 alien abduction account of Barney and Betty Hill. Their experiences, initially shared under hypnosis, expanded into a complex narrative that captivated the public's imagination. By 1966, a Gallup poll revealed that 5% of Americans claimed to have seen a "flying saucer while nearly half believed in their reality. Despite the enthusiasm, efforts to debunk these claims persisted, exemplified by the 1966 TV special “UFO: Friend, Foe or Fantasy?”, where Walter Cronkite, alongside Carl Sagan and J. Allen Hynek, sought to demystify the phenomenon.
